Interesting Places to Use Your French: Nouvelle-Calédonie in the South Pacific


Trivia:

*New Caledonia is an overseas territory of France. The official language is French and its people carry French passports.

*The original settlers of New Caledonia were the Kanaks who are thought to have migrated from Southeast Asia thousands of years ago. Other groups include Europeans such as the Caldoches who mostly descend from French convicts, and Vietnamese, Tahitian, and Indonesian peoples.

*Due to its isolation many species on the island are representative of an ancient ecosystem. The island is home to a large coral reef and is surrounded by the largest lagoon in the world.

*New Caledonia has 25% of the world's nickel reserves and nickel is its major export.

*Popular sports on the island include snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, soccer, rugby, tennis, cricket, sailing, and horse racing.
